The MAT Academy fosters our innate desire to express ourselves creatively while developing an original perspective of the world. Through projects and interdisciplinary units, students are challenged to think critically, collaborate, and communicate using a variety of media, arts, and technology. MAT students develop a profound understanding of how design can impact the functionality and beauty of the world. The MAT Academy offers many supplemental learning opportunities. Computer science is the dedicated enrichment activity and MAT students receive priority seating. However, MAT students are extremely well rounded and additionally engage in leadership, intramural sports, music, and art electives. The MAT Academy also provides supplemental learning opportunities through video production, coding (Java Script, Pyton, and Sratch), stock market simulation competitions, website development (html, css, and Google Sites), and software use (i.e. Photoshop, Microsoft Word and Excel). The Yearbook and Reed Review Student News are also taught by MAT teachers and are further available learning opportunities.
Our field trips include: Huntington Gardens, Los Angeles Times, California Science Center, Museum of Tolerance, Getty Villa, Autry Museum, and LA Film School. MAT had several overnight trips last year. Our 6th graders went to NatureBridge (3 days of inquiry-based learning in the Santa Monica Mountains). Our 7th graders went to San Francisco (Technology Museum, University visits, and tour of the city). Our 8th graders went to Yosemite and Washington D.C. (Gettysburg, Capitol, and Georgetown).
More information regarding the enrollment/permit process can be found on the Smaller Learning Communities webpage.
