Sunday March 12, 2017
Hosted by Walter Reed Middle School, Friends Of Reed and Reed PTSA
After months of preparation and competition at their local schools, more than 25,000 students from over 110 public, private, magnet, and religious schools in Los Angeles County competed to have the opportunity to advance to the Los Angeles County Scripps Regional Spelling Bee as the last step before the national competition! Last year, the 2016 contest lasted six hours and 15 rounds with 344 words. Our Regional Champ won with the correct spelling of the word gudgeon. Originally Greek, this word passed from Latin to French before becoming English. It is a noun which means: any of numerous spiny-finned fishes, usually having a broad depressed head and large mouth, and occurring chiefly in shallow coastal waters. Other notable finalist and elimination words included: affidavit, feloniously, singspiration, gnathonic, froufrou, gourami and mercerize. We encourage you to look them up!
This year the bee will take place on Sunday, March 12th, starting 2 PM (remember, March 12th is Daylight Savings Time!). Come cheer on our 2017 Reed local school winner Matthew Chak. All are invited, no admission charge. Thank you again to our sponsors Friends of Reed and the Reed PTSA.
11:30 AM – 1:30 PM: Plan to arrive early and enjoy our pre-bee activities! Mingle and meet the other local school winners. Refreshments available, including beverages, pizza, hotdogs, fruit, desserts, and snacks. This year the Mobile Bee University will be joining us, sharing a honey extracting demo and bee education. You will be encouraged to add your artwork to their truck, fun for the whole family!
